Birthday Cakes for Kids, by Annie Rigg. From Ryland Peters & Small, $22.95. Available at Amazon.ca.
It really doesn’t matter if we like the cakes in this beautifully shot book full of flour-y cars, trains, treasure chests, castles, caterpillars and more (though we do). What matters is whether the kids will go for it – and boy will they. We didn’t even have to crack the book open before our kids launched into “I want that” mode, expressing total approval for the jolly green dinosaur on the cover. Then as we flipped through, shouts came fast and furious for the princess cupcakes, the pirate ship, the rocket ship, the magical carousel and on and on and on. Conclusion: If you’re into making your own birthday cakes, pick up a copy for inspiration (and detailed instructions).
