What fingers foods are best for baby and when do I introduce them?
-- Sari, mom of a 10-month- old girl
Around six months, baby will start eating solid foods – a misnomer indeed since those spoonfuls of cereal will be quite pureed. Still, once baby gets used to these new foods, you can then begin testing than pincer grip with small, cut-up finger foods. That time, according to the Canadian Paediatric Society, is around nine months of age.
Good bite-size foods to try:
- Dried toast
- Crackers
- Cheerios
- Cooked pasta
- Banana and other peeled, seeded fruit like peach, mango and watermelon
- Cooked carrots and other softened vegetables like sweet potato, squash and cauliflower
- Cooked meat, chicken and tofu
- Beans
- Egg yolk
Foods to avoid:
- Candy
- Nuts
- Popcorn
- Raisins
- Fruit with pits
- Chips
And remember, regardless of food and size, never let baby eat alone.
