There are many shared key competencies for being a great parent and being great in the workforce. These include organizational skills, budgeting skills and computer skills. One skill that gets practiced at work that could use more attention at home is ‘thinking before you speak.’ Many of us think carefully before we say something to our boss, speak out loud at a meeting or send an e-mail to a client. Why not spend an extra few seconds thinking about what we say to our kids rather than the typical, “not right now” and “because I said so.” It takes practice, but before you know it, you’ll be saying, “that sounds like a lot of fun, how about we do that this afternoon” or “the reason why you can’t have a treat right now is because we’re having birthday cake at a party this evening.”
