I should probably admit right now that I love decorating. I truly enjoy shopping for furniture, fabric and paint. I also love refinishing found pieces and giving them new life. So when it was time to set up the nursery I jumped right in.
What I didn’t realize was how “green” I was being at the time – which sounds oh-so-much better than cheap. Reusing was key to putting together baby’s new room.
- Friends lent Marc and me a beautiful wood crib.
- I gleefully sanded, repainted, distressed and added new hardware to an ugly old dresser.
- A flat-top blanket box became a change table.
- A stashed-away corner shelf housed diapers and wipes.
- Antique wood crates were transformed into shelving to hold the CD player, stuffed animals, etc.
- My antique night table from pre-marriage days moved into the nursery.
- A framed Peter Rabbit cel Marc had lying around was finally hung.
Reusing items we already had also meant I could spend more (Marc may disagree here!) on the remaining needs. I headed to my dream store, Pottery Barn, and found exactly what I wanted – a beautiful patchwork blue and white blanket with touches of green, along with matching pillow and bumper. And it was on sale! With linens in hand, picking the paint was a cinch -- a sky blue that we loved so much we repainted my daughter’s big girl room the same colour when we moved.
Decorating should be fun, not hard. And it doesn’t have to be expensive to get the look you want. Just remember to ask around and then shop around. And remember, the nursery won’t last forever, so invest in quality pieces that can and will transition to a big-kid room -- yes, we are still using the blanket and pillow from PB!
