The Naked Truth

The other day -- while hovering behind my closet door, pulling my bra through my sleeve -- it occurred to me that there are no real guidelines as to what goes when it comes to “showing skin” between parent and child.
In my case, being as I have two stepsons, I feel the fact that we don’t share any genes entitles me to full privacy. But if they were my biological sons, would they still be seeing my bits when they are 10 and 11 years old? This I wonder.
And what about Teddy, my newborn? For now I see (and clean) all his parts. But a day will come when he will be hiding behind doors so that I can’t see his business. When is that day? Does it flip off like a light switch, or is it a slow evolution? Right now my stepsons still frolic around freely in front of me without showing any signs of modesty. But the fact that girls are quickly moving from icky to cute in their minds tells me that I will be shut out any day now.
It seems that every family establishes the rules that they are comfortable with, and those rules seem to transcend generations. One of my closest girlfriends is still comfortable being naked in front of her father and she is 38 years old! My “!” is not a judgmental one but more amazed than anything (there are days I don’t want my husband to see me, never mind my dad). But because of this relaxed attitude, her children have the same laissez faire manner when it comes to baring it all.
I am no social scientist but I can only guess that, if managed properly, this provides kids with greater levels of comfort with their bodies regardless of their shape and size. It seems like a delicate balance between letting them feel that they should be comfortable, without giving them license to show it all to every curious (and horny) suitor in their midst.
Luckily for me, I have quite some time before I need to do this dance with Teddy. So for now I get to enjoy full frontal nudity (and sometimes a pee in the face too!).
