About Neige Var
Once upon a time, Neige Var was an operating room nurse and downtown dweller who leisurely spent her time dining out or entertaining friends. The birth of her son changed all that. Now she's a snap-happy suburban mom on unpaid leave with a knack for organizing play dates. Check in with Neige as she continues to adjust to her new role, her new location and her new life.
I recently attended a baby shower for Neelan's godmother, Jenn, hosted by her mom and three of her close friends.
Jenn and her husband love to sail, so the nautically themed baby shower was a perfect way to celebrate. Hues of blue and images of sailboats were used on the invites, in the décor, on menu card and even in the food. I thought the theme was clever on many levels; it said “boy” with subtlety, yet had personal meaning.
Ahoy Mateys
The amount of food was sinful! A true delight, especially the home-made dishes. Dessert was an array of yummy cookies and cupcakes from West Island-based Crazy about Cupcakes. Each cupcake was beautifully adorned with a sailboat, which made them almost too pretty to devour…almost.
The “super-sweet” note continued right to the end, as guests were treated to a delicious thank-you gift -- a homemade cookie in the shape of a starfish. You could feel the love that went into these with every bite. Yes, of course I ate it.
During the shower, we played guessing games and filled a notebook with well wishes, advice and encouragement. Jenn opened the gifts and as everyone ooh’d and ahh’d I thought it so heartwarming to see the baby showered with handmade cards, blankets and keepsakes that had stories attached. These personal touches are what make for heirlooms and treasured memories.
Easy Sailing
I always think of baby showers as a reminder to expecting mothers that they have a support system, that there are people to call on for help, advice and strength, and that they have a cheering squad to encourage them on and an audience eagerly awaiting their new arrival.
As sailors, I know Jenn and her husband will navigate the sometimes tricky waters of new parenthood with grace and good humor. And they’ll learn quickly that their home will never be shipshape again!
