Nice Things

drop-in centre canada (Aug.04.10)

My eyes are glued to my daughters' combined closet, hoping by sheer magic a perfect top will jump out for my 1.5 year-old. I peer at all the nice blouses and dresses she received for her birthday and Christmas. There is nothing appropriate to wear for a park playdate. Everything is either too small, too big or nice to wear for the park. An eye on the time says that I need to make a decision quickly.

I spy a pretty blue top that I was saving for a special occasion. I chide myself. I do not remember the last special occasion. My mind wanders to when I packed up my mother’s cherished things after she passed. Items in her closet still had price tags on them and receipts tucked inside. I can still smell her perfume in the air as I helped pack away her possessions; items that my dad had put aside for us when we got older.

I pause at the hanger that holds the garment. I pop the top over my toddler’s head. It barely fits. Just in time to use it. I finish packing the kids up and realize I need to change purses so I can keep my hands free when I chase the girls around the park.

I run over to my closet and go through the boxes that hold every purse I have ever owned, plus a few of my mom’s. I open a dust bag that holds a gorgeous purse that my husband bought me on his last trip. Thinking it's too nice to use until we go on a date, I tuck it away for a rainy day.

My eyes glaze out of the sun beamed window, reminding me that I deserve to not save things for a rainy day. That day may not come. With a smile at the memory of my dear mom, I fill up the Coach purse and hustle us out the door just in time to meet our friends across the street.

Life is too short. You have to wear the nice things, now.
