Frog. Garden. Bug
baby sign languagecanada
(May.27.10)

Now that you’re outside often with your wee one, there’s a lot more to see and explore! Spend time in the garden or at the park and describe what you are seeing. Narrate your child’s world using both signs and speech. Label the frogs and bugs you see using both spoken words and signs.

Frog
Show this sign to your little one when you see frogs in the garden or images of frogs in books or on clothing. “Ribbiting” is optional but encouraged!
How to make the sign: Hold two fingers in a V shape under your chin while bending and unbending your fingers.
Tip: The movement of your fingers imitates the throat of a bullfrog moving in and out.

 |
Garden
Show your baby this sign when you are looking at or digging in the garden.
How to make the sign: Your dominant hand moves upward through your non-dominant hand. Then your dominant hand moves in a circular motion.
Tip: The sign for ‘garden’ combines the sign for ‘plant’ and ‘area’. The first movement imitates a plant growing while the second sign indicates a small area of land.
|
 |
Bug
Use this sign with your baby when you see images of bugs in books and when you see bugs outside.
How to make the sign: Using your dominant hand, extend two fingers and your thumb and place your thumb under your nose. Bend your extended fingers up and down.
Tip: Your two extended fingers imitate a bug’s antennae.
