Our current nanny is moving away. We have a potential new nanny but she needs to be sponsored, which I have never done before. Would you have any advice or notes on what this entails?
Kathryn – mom of three, ages 2, 4 and 6.
According to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), as an employer looking to sponsor a nanny you must:
- Prove you have tried finding a nanny already in Canada
- Make enough money to pay the caregiver
- Have room for the caregiver to live in your home
- Provide a job in which the majority of the duties are caregiving
- Prove that you can supply proper benefits and working conditions
- Apply for a labour market opinion (which assesses the impact your hire will have on the Canadian job market) from the HRSDC/Service Canada centre
- Help the caregiver file a work permit application
- Sign a contract with the caregiver
- Be aware that sponsorship can take upwards of six months
The caregiver must:
- Check whether they need to receive an exit visa to leave their country
- Be screened by the CIC
- Be educated or trained/experienced in caregiving
- Speak English or French
- Pass medical, security and criminal clearances
- File a work permit application
- Sign a contract with the employer
