video: how to make your own baby foodcanada
(Jul.21.10)
We know making our own baby food will make us feel good about ourselves (and is better for baby too). We just have no clue where to start. So we asked our nutrition expert, Lianne Phillipson-Webb of Sprout Right, to show us exactly how it's done -- with visuals, so that we're totally clear. (Hey, we have mom brain. Cut us some slack!) Watch now to see how easy and economical it is to make food for your baby.
Tools of the trade:
- a peeler
- a good knife that you're comfortable with
- a steamer pot/double boiler
- a hand blender
- baby food trays (like ice cube trays with a lid)
- freezer bags and a Sharpie marker
Fruits and vegetables that make great purées for the 6-9 month set:
- butternut squash
- sweet potato
- broccoli
- parsnips
- beets
- asparagus
- zucchini
- carrots
- cauliflower
- apples
- pears
- blueberries
- plums
- peaches
- bananas (just mash and serve)
- avocado (just mash and serve)
Helpful tips:
- Check with your health care provider before starting your baby on solids.
- Always mash first, then check consistency before adding water. Foods like zucchini might not need any water added.
- Frozen cubes can be stored for six months in the freezer
- Take out next day's cubes from freezer and thaw in refrigerator overnight.
- Thawed baby food cubes can be stored in the fridge for up to three days.
