Your Child is What You Eat

in the newscanada (Apr.25.11)

While many of us take pregnancy for granted, eating foods we normally wouldn't and enjoying larger helpings (to feed two of course), a new study says what we eat during this time can have a profound effect on whether our children will have weight issues.

According to researchers, a low-carbohydrate diet during pregnancy can alter the child's DNA, called epigenetic changes, and those changes were later found to be markers of higher body fat at ages six and nine. A mother's weight and a baby's birth weight had less influence on a child's future obesity.

To learn more, read the article in Time magazine or the study, published April 6, 2011, in the online issue of Diabetes.
