There were 492 drowning deaths in 2005, according to the Lifesaving Society, making it the third leading cause of accidental death in this country for people age 60 and younger. For children under 5, it’s the second leading cause of accidental death, after automobile accidents. What’s even more shocking: Most of the people who drowned never had any intention of going into the water.
