Kristi Yamaguchi Dreams Big

q&a with kristi yamaguchicanada (Apr.06.11)

Ever since she first appeared on the international skating scene, Kristi Yamaguchi has displayed grace, charm and infectious happiness. She always wears a big smile and she always seems upbeat and confident, in good times and bad. These enviable qualities have followed her in everything she’s done since hanging up her blades – from founding the Always Dream Foundation, a charity to support organizations with a positive influence on children, participating in (and winning) Dancing with the Stars and now writing a children’s book, Dream Big, Little Pig. We had the chance to ask Kristi about her latest venture.

When and why did you decide to write a children’s book?

Several years ago. We read so many books at bedtime since having our two daughters (Keara, 7, and Emma, 5) and I was inspired to see the joy and love they showed for the books.

Will this become a new career for you?

I do hope Poppy goes on some more adventures, I'll cross my fingers!

Where do you find storybook inspiration?

I really wanted to have a positive message within the story so I looked to some of my own experiences growing up. It was a natural direction to go with the "Dream" theme.

What advice can you share with other moms thinking about a career writing children’s books?

Look at the books your own children are drawn to. Keep it simple, add humor if you can (kids love it), put down on paper and hope for interest from a publisher.

What should they be prepared to face in trying to do so?

It’s a long process. If you really believe in the manuscript, you can "sell" it. Have an open mind and dialogue with your editor.

What advice can you impart to other moms looking to change careers in general?

Find something that you really enjoy. If it’s taking you away from your kids, it's got to be worth it.

You seem so busy – with your Always Dream Foundation, with your book, with your family. How do you stay sane?

I surround myself with awesome people I trust and work well with. They help me get it all done. I also savor the quiet moments with my girls; those make everything okay.

What did you learn in the world of skating that helped you prepare for the world of motherhood?

To have a positive attitude and take one thing at a time. Motherhood can be overwhelming with a baby, you just need to be patient and know that things will be okay when they get crazy.

If you could share one thing with new moms/pregnant women, what would it be?

Stay home and take at least three months to get to know your baby. It's an adjustment for all involved and those first few months are precious. And take lots of pictures and video. It’s amazing how fast they change.
