How to Order the Perfect Pizza

what to eat and avoid at pizza pizzacanada (Feb.07.12)

Pizza can be a near-perfect food when ordered correctly. It’s the knowing how to order that unfortunately most people get wrong.

To ensure you make the most of your pizza-eating-pleasure, here are our top Pizza Pizza picks.

Winners:
Cheese: Sure, it’s a bit plain, but a traditional slice of cheese pizza is a waist-friendly option thanks to its lowest calorie count.  One slice of a medium-sized pizza will only set you back 190 calories, 28 grams carbs and 5 grams of fat.
Pesto Amore: Ah, this one is a winner — and our favourite of the bunch. Thankfully, its calorie-count is favourable too.  One slice of a medium-sized pizza comes in at 210 calories, 27 grams of carbs and 6 grams of fat.
Garden Veggie: For something more colourful and a bit healthier thanks to its ultra-healthy vegetable toppings, the garden veggie provides pizza satisfaction.  One slice of a medium is only 200 calories, 29 grams of carbs and 7 grams of fat.
New York Pepperoni: Yes you can eat pepperoni! Just make sure you wash it down with water due to its higher sodium content.  One slice of a medium is 210 calories, 28 grams of carbs and 7 grams of fat.

Walk away from the walk-in slice special:
It may be super convenient, with a heavenly aroma and taste, but one slice is equivalent to a complete meal – and then some.  Averaging 600 calories and 70 grams of carbs per slice, consider the walk-in a real treat or something to be shared when possible.

Dipping sauces:
Unless you’re calorie-loading, you’re best to avoid dipping sauces altogether.  One serving of creamy garlic will set you back 360 calories and 39 grams of fat.  If you love to dip, pick Frank’s Hot Sauce. It’s a mere 10 calories and has less than 1 gram of fat per serving.

Salads:
Garden, greek or ceasar are great options, just skip the dressing and top it with your own, or save half the dressing for another time. Without dressing, you’re looking at 150 to 250 calories. With dressing, add another 250 to 300 calories and 17 grams of fat.

Just say no:
To extra meat on your slice — including bacon, meatballs and ground beef.  Other than lean ham or the occasional slice of pepperoni, you’re playing with calorie, fat and sodium fire. Save your meat-fix for a burger another day.

Go gluten-free:
Just one slice of gluten-free pizza can save you as much as 50 calories and 10 grams of carbs (versus multigrain crust).
