About Arren Williams
If Arren Williams were to walk through one of those new scanners at the airport, security personnel might be surprised to see chairs, tables and lamps floating around in his head. As one of Canada’s top stylists, editors and trend reporters, he is always on the hunt for the next great find that could take a room from blah to spectacular.
Put a Bird on It
design diary: bird rug canada
(Mar.16.11)
There’s a recent clip from that cultish new show Portlandia that has been causing hilarity among design types called "Put A Bird On It," where Bryce Shivers – played by funny man Fred Armisen – and Lisa Eversam – played by Carrie Brownstein – make fun of our apparently insatiable appetite for putting bird designs on, well, just about anything (and thinking it’s cute). But my question is, have we all had enough of bird motifs showing up just about everywhere?

Maybe not. The tufted pile wool rug in the snapshot above is one of Thomas Paul’s lovely designs, and is such a hit that it also shows up on upholstery fabric from Duralee (which would look fab as pillows and drapes or as a reupholstered vintage chair) and melamine dishes (which look as good hung on the wall as they do sitting under a green salad).
Then, over at Umbra, they’ve got a slew of new bird-themed designs on offer – take a look here – for everything from coat hooks to their latest, an item wittily called Bird Bath, which is a sweet shower caddy with three feathered friends perched and ready to join in when you sing in the shower.
Laugh all you like, far from being an endangered species in design, birds are definitely here to stay.
