Navy and White Mix and Match
design diary: mixing navy and white patterns canada
(Apr.20.11)

Even when I’m standing around, like I was the other day at Designer Fabric Outlet waiting on some yardage to get cut, I always end up thinking about something design-y. And, since I was at DFO, I started rifling through their Outdoor Fabric rack just to see what I could pull together into a bit of a pattern palette.
The navy and white combo totally jumped out at me, since I think it’s such a summertime classic, but gets to be way more interesting when it’s shown in a mix of pattern styles – everything from that bold graphic trellis through to the small scale block print. Mix those three patterns together on some outdoor pillows and upholstery and it would look fantastic. Guaranteed. And hey, the great thing about DFO is that the fabrics are super-duper affordable, the ones I picked range between $10.99 to $25.99 a yard!
Of course, navy and white is a hot trend beyond outdoor fabrics. After DFO I headed to West Elm and snapped a pic of these super sweet mix-and-match Moroccan Canapé plates. Take a closer look, and you’ll see the patterns have a hand drawn feel that totally reference that small scale block print in the fabric palette.
Add it all up, and between the fabrics and those plates you’re playing around with seven patterns that all work together beautifully. Just goes to show ya – navy and white is definitely a classic combination, but it’s miles away from boring.
