Big Apple

make-it session canada (Nov.06.09)

When I saw this Make Your Own Caramel Apples kit ($10, at Indigo) earlier this week, I knew I'd just found my next Make-it Session project. The kit comes complete with the caramel starter mix, 8 wooden sticks and a tiny bag of "jimmies" (chocolate sprinkles). While you could buy this kit and give it as a gift to a child, I think it's more fun to use the kit as a shortcut to make your own apples, then give the finished product to your friends when you get invited over.

What You'll Need

8 Granny Smith apples (the tartness is a nice combination with the sweet caramel and candy)
1 stick of butter
1 cup of cream
Candy for decorating
Small freezer bags
Twist ties

Directions:

1. The instructions on the kit are a cinch to follow. The trick to making these apples even better is to forgo the "jimmies" and hit the bulk candy store instead. I decided on Skor bits, Smarties, Reese's Pieces and chocolate-covered gummi bears.

Tip:
Dip one apple in caramel and then candy immediately (to ensure the candy sticks to the caramel before it hardens). Avoid any chocolate that will melt when it touches the hot caramel (that means no chocolate chips -- they'll just make a mess!).

Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
