Summer Sips

5 barbecue-friendly winescanada (Jun.25.09)

Got the grill covered but undecided about the pairings? Here are five versatile wines to try.

2007 Deinhard Green Label Riesling, Germany ($11.95)
This Riesling has a thread of sweetness that isn’t overbearing and tastes beautiful on a summer’s day on the patio or by the BBQ. It’s a good match with white fish, seasoned pork tenderloin and a fresh fruit/melon salad. Serve well chilled. –Angela Aiello

2006 Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia ($17.95)
iYellow picks the Yellow Label! This wine is very versatile and suits many BBQ dinner options from ribs to steak. This easy-to-drink red has a touch of fruit and doesn’t leave your mouth dry. Serve just below room temperature to bring out the flavour. –AA

Bottega Il Vino Dei Prosecco, Italy ($15)
When it comes to lingering with friends and cooking outdoors, a bottle of sparkling wine should never be too far away. This bottle matches well with light BBQ foods such as grilled veggies, salads or herb-crusted fish. It goes down easy and is perfect for an evening under the stars. –AA

2007 E & J Gallo Sauvignon Blanc, California ($8.95)
This wine is a refreshing option that pairs nicely with grilled shrimp and vegetables.  Light and floral, Gallo’s made an excellent value wine that has a good tangy crispness to it. –Paxton Allewell

*2005 Palatine Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, VQA Ontario ($19.95)
This Niagara-On-The-Lake cabernet is medium-bodied and offers complex red fruit flavours alongside rich oaky notes. Since it is not very heavy it will complement just about anything off the grill including chicken. Note: May seem lighter than usual for some cab lovers as it’s from a cool climate. –PA

Please note prices may vary. All wines available at your local wine store or direct from the winery. (*Available at www.iYellowWineStore.com.)
