test lab: eco-friendly laundry detergentscanada
(Apr.19.10)
The inspiration: Skeptical of the new eco-friendly laundry detergents on the market, we took four white (and patriotic) socks, stained them with cranberry juice, let them set overnight and washed each with a different detergent (with a full load of course - we're all about equal variables, but we wouldn't waste an entire wash on one sock!).
The testers: Bonnie Mo, Sarah Rogers, Sam Speisman and Mia Shulman
The products:
The results:
Purex and Green Works stood out as the best. The socks came out perfectly clean, soft, and smelled fresh. Purex uses a biodegradable formula and recyclable packaging, and Green Works uses 95 per cent natural ingredients and is never tested on animals.
We loved the smell of Sunlight (which contains no drying alcohol or dyes), and the easy-to-use pump spout on Method, but we could still see a hint of a stain after washing. While they'd be great for regular loads, if you have tough stains (Hello, Mamas!) you might want to use a stain remover in addition to the detergent.
