Testing Produce Bags
test lab: pc produce bagscanada
(May.09.11)

The inspiration: Fruits and veggies go bad. It's inevitable. But getting a few more days out of our fruit means we don't have to turn our kitchen into a bakery every time our bananas start browning.
The testers: Bananas, broccoli & lettuce
The product: PC Green Reusable Produce Bags, $8. Available at most major grocery stores.
The results:

Day 3: There was a clear difference between the bananas by day three. Though the difference between the broccoli wasn't as obvious, the leaves on the broccoli that was left out of the bag were noticeably wilted. The lettuce that wasn't put in the bag (on the left) had seriously wilted, while the lettuce in the bag still felt crisp and looked bright.

Day 5: By day five, the bananas left out had disappeared (a sweetspotter who shall remain a mystery saved them from going to waste and ate them). Judging by the bananas in the bag, I can't imagine what the ones outside of the bag would have looked like. The broccoli sans bag was soft and smelling funny while the broccoli in the bag was still fresh enough to eat. The lettuce left out was limp and browning, way past its prime, but the lettuce in the bag was still crunchy, with only slight browning in one spot.
The verdict: We were blown away by how fresh the produce in the bags was by the end of the test and we loved being able to reuse the bags several times after cleaning them. We give the bags two green thumbs up.
