After big sis Sweetspot launched their Fall Trends Guide last week, we couldn't help but get inspired. Eager to find out what's hot in home design for fall 2009, we called up Debbie Travis for advice.
We're ready to bring a bit of fall decor into our home. What's in for fall 2009?
Whenever doing a makeover one should always go with ideas that work well with the use of each room. But mostly, you should use what you love. Having said that, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when making your decisions; planning, planning, planning. These are some of the trends we see happening this fall.
Nestling: Fall 2009 emphasizes the philosophy of well-being and comfort, making our homes warm comfortable places that we can spend more time in. This includes accessorizing with knits and sensory textiles (textures that create warmth, such as cable knits & velvets) and incorporating accent colours such as egg-yolk yellow or dusty rose to bring the warmth of summer into the home for winter.
Mix & Match: The trend is to combine old with new, patterns with solids or blending multiple patterns to create unique and playful layers. Patterns include romantic & nostalgic florals, laces and embroideries or patchworks blending them all.
Artisan Craftsmanship: The fusion of tradition/craft with design. The uniqueness of one-of-a-kind craftsmanship with a focus on sustainable materials and practice. In home accents, this is appearing in everything from natural wood finishes and hand-painted surfaces to embroideries/openwork.
Cultural Mosaic: Increased communications and the ease of access to the global community brings an eclectic fusion of style into the home. Evidence of travel to exotic destinations, whether real or aspirational, enter the home in Ikat prints, textured animal leathers & exotic dark woods.
Earthy Colours: The hot colours for Fall 2009 are timeless neutral grays and earthy browns. These tones paint a backdrop for treasures and accents of leather and rich distressed woods, dark antique bronzes and conservative menswear patterns. Touches of Gingerbread Orange add warmth & sophistication to the palette.
And mostly, have a ball.
