Spring Cleaning: The Front Hall

Over the next five weeks, our expert organizer Barbara Sidoruk will help organize your home from top to bottom. This week, she's tackling the front hall.

With small homes and even smaller condos, front halls tend to get cluttered, and I’m a big advocate of hiding most of it. If you aren’t fortunate enough to have a foyer or a mud room, here are a few suggestions that won’t break the bank:
  • Hang a shoe bag on the inside of your closet door for mittens, scarves and hats.
  • A large ceramic vase to store your umbrellas is both decorative and useful. HomeSense always has a great selection.
  • If you don’t have a hall closet, keep your coats on hooks and think about a bench with a lid for further storage. The trick is to keep everything off the floor.
  • A simple bookcase with labeled baskets is an inexpensive solution to keep small items organized. Loop some ribbon through a manila label and tie it to the basket with the contents listed.
  • If you own a condo, your hallway is probably only 36” wide which means you will need a cabinet that measures no more than 10”. Fill it with labeled baskets to avoid searching for items you need.
  • Place a decorative dish for your keys and your incoming mail on the top of the hall cabinet.
Barbara has been a successful wardrobe stylist in the film industry for the last 20 years. Many of her clients look to her not only to update and refresh their wardrobes, but to organize the closets they hang in. Her company, Space came out of organizing closets and into the office, the basement and the entire home. She can be reached at barbara.sidoruk@sympatico.ca or 416-937-9708.
