Host with the Most

ask an expert: etiquettecanada (May.18.10)

I love having guests up at my cottage, but I never know if I'm being a good host. What can I do to make sure that my guests have a fantastic time?

Karen Y. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and etiquette expert Janet Watson answered;

To ensure your guests have a great time at the cottage and you are a relaxed host, try these suggestions:

  • Make sure everyone is clear on arrival and departure dates.
  • Let your guests know well in advance if cell phone or internet service is not available at your cottage.
  • Plan your menus and stock up on groceries before everyone arrives. Remember to ask about dietary restrictions.
  • Let your guests know if four-legged friends are welcome or not.
  • When your friends arrive, give them a detailed tour of the cottage and let them know of any rules you might have - such as, "We try to keep our shower times to a minimum so everyone has enough hot water."
  • Show them how to use the coffee maker and other appliances.
  • Night lights in the hallway and bathroom are helpful so guests can find their way in the dark.
  • Keep extra blankets stored in bedroom closets and make sure you have ample bathroom and beach towels for everyone.
  • A basket of toiletries in the bathroom is a nice idea in case someone has forgotten their toothbrush or other necessary item. Use those little hotel bottles of lotion, shampoo and conditioner you’ve been collecting!
  • Board games, puzzles, DVD’s, arts & crafts supplies and dress-up clothes can be stored in a bin to keep children entertained if the weather is unpleasant.
  • If you have a boat or other water toys, have a chat about water safety and make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone.
Have a great summer vacation and don’t forget the bug spray!
