3 Steps to a Perfect Kitchen Renovation

ask an expert: renovatingcanada (Feb.02.10)

What’s the best order to renovate your kitchen (cabinets, appliances, backsplash, countertops, flooring, etc.)?

lbarth left a question in the comments section on Sarah's Kitchen Makeover blog, so we got our friends at Home Depot to answer;

Taking on a kitchen renovation can be exciting, but it can also be a lot of work. By doing things in the proper order, you will avoid having to go back and fix mistakes that could have been easily avoided.

  1. The best place to start is with flooring. It may sound logical, but you’d be amazed how many people don’t start there and find themselves in a tricky position later. The most important thing to ensure is that the flooring covers the entire space, from wall to wall.
  2. If you are planning on installing new cabinets or replacing old ones, that should be your next step. In order to replace cabinets properly you need to remove the countertop. But keep in mind, trying to reinstall a countertop, after the new cabinets have been put in is often a challenge. It might not fit the same way, and although countertops seem stable, they can easily crack or break when being moved around. But even with that said, my recommendation is still to always start with the cabinetry and then move onto the countertop, otherwise your cabinets won’t be stable.  Now if you are just resurfacing the cabinets, as opposed to replacing them, you can do that without removing the countertop.
  3. Your final step is to install a backsplash. These days backsplashes are very easy to install, especially with the natural stone or glass tile backsplashes that are available.

Another thing to keep in mind during the design stage is the appliances. Most stoves and dishwashers are pretty standard size-wise and it should not be a problem to plan for where they’ll fit in the kitchen. Fridges however, come in an assortment of different sizes so ensure you take the proper measurements to make sure it fits in your beautiful new kitchen!
