Thinking of putting a swimming pool in your backyard? Our expert shares what you need to know before you break ground.
Since giving up my cottage last year, I've been thinking about installing a pool in my backyard. What do I need to know?

Selecting the right pool for your family is the first step in transforming your backyard into an oasis. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Determine the type of pool you want. This usually comes down to personal preference, available space and budget limitations. Above-ground pools tend to be the least expensive, while in-ground pools offer aesthetic appeal in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. These include construction in concrete, vinyl and fibreglass.
- Decide on accompanying items. These are items that you might want to have installed at the same time as the pool such as a cover, deck, fence, spa, waterfall, fountain and lighting system.
- Investigate any permits the municipality might require. You should also consult the most up-to-date land survey of the property in order to provide the builder with the location of buried utilities.
- Get more than one quote. As with any major purchase, it's advisable to get more than one quote on the project. Be sure to choose a reputable company, preferably one that is a member of the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada. Members abide by the association’s Code of Ethics and thereby perform to an extremely high standard. Furthermore, they can offer plenty of valuable advice on pool selection, placement on the lot, and local bylaws.
Once the pool has been installed, make sure that you use it safely by developing and rigorously enforcing a set of pool rules. Then enjoy it!
