Throughout September, we're sharing tips from Sears Canada's Brand and Trend Director on purchasing major appliances. We'll find out what to look for when shopping for a fridge, stove, washer/dryer duo and dishwasher. This week, we take an in-depth look at buying a washer/dryer duo:
When purchasing a washer and dryer, you're faced with what seems like endless options, with each style offering something new. Instead of thinking of it as an overwhelming tedious chore, make the shopping experience enjoyable; a chance to stylize your laundry room. Consider the list below to ensure that your new washer/dryer pair has all the mechanics and design you are looking for.
1. Measure your space. Avoid having to return a machine you looked hard for because of its size.
2. Decide on an aesthetic design for your laundry machine. The laundry room is emerging from its basement dungeon, calling for colour and style. There is no reason why your laundry machine can’t be as chic as the clothes going in it. Step away from the standard white and add flair to the room with adventurous blues, reds or even purple!
3. Aesthetics aside, take a moment of practicality and look into the different types of machines available to accommodate your budget and needs.
- A top-load washer with centre post agitator will typically cost the least.
- A top-load washer without the centre post agitator provides more space for heavy loads.
- A front-load washer is known for its energy efficiency. They use less water per load than a top load washer.
- A laundry centre (washer/dryer unit) is great for laundry rooms with limited space, particularly in condos and townhouses where washer and dryer pairs are often found in the closet.
4. Choose a washing machine with an automatic temperature control to regulate incoming hot and cold water and maintain the proper temperature throughout your wash.
5. Washing machines with automatic dispensers — for detergent, bleach, and fabric softener — ensure the appropriate cleaner is released at the right time, eliminating the need for you to watch over the load.
6. Consider what material you would like for your dryer tub:
- Porcelain on steel resists scratches and other harmful effects of laundry.
- Stainless steel is a long-lasting, increasingly-popular, stain-resistant material.
- Painted steel provides a practical durable finish.
7. Look at the energy star rating of the machine before you purchase to determine its efficiency. You can find this at www.sears.ca.
