We've loved Ty since his early days as the charming (and buff!) carpenter on TLC's Trading Spaces. Now he's the star of his own show, and we're watching him make the world a better place, one home at a time. We chatted with the L.A.-based hunk on three minor projects for the home that deliver extreme impact.
Never underestimate the power of colour. I'm not saying go paint every single wall in your home a different colour, but the right colour can absolutely change your mood. In the fall, a nice persimmon or china red is a fun way to bring some warmth into your home.
- Decorate with meaning. I like using personal photos to decorate. Like blowing up a picture of your kid, or even your dog, if that's what you have. It's a lot cheaper than buying art – and it's original. A photo will also remind you of what's important in your life.
- Make something with your own two hands. In my new book I show you how to make simple things, like a shelf and a stool. But it can be anything really. There is an amazing satisfaction from creating something for your home. You will love it and you will love showing it to other people. You won't really know what I'm talking about until you do it for yourself.
Ty Pennington recently released Good Design Can Change Your Life: Beautiful Rooms, Inspiring Stories (Simon & Schuster), his second book after Ty's Tricks: Home Repair Secrets (2003).
