About Gabrielle Johnson

When shopping finally becomes an Olympic event, editor Gabrielle Johnson is pretty sure she’ll take home the gold medal for Canada – after inquiring about the availability of other colours (lilac? chartreuse?) and politely requesting a discount. Every week, she shares a glimpse into what’s on her style radar.

Anglomania

life/style Toronto (Jun.15.10)

I have a confession to make: I’m an Anglophile. I lived in London for several years as a grad student and fell hopelessly in love with the city, the people, and of course, the style. And even though I’m now Toronto-based, my heart still belongs to British design – that’s why I never miss an issue of UK shelter magazines like Living Etc. and Elle Decoration, and why I spend an inordinate amount of time perusing the websites of my favourite London design shops. If you’re planning a visit across the pond (or just looking for décor inspiration), here are my top five haunts:

Taking a trip to Graham and Green is like stepping into my dream home. It's a treasure trove of feminine, sexy, colourful, exotic pieces: think luxe bone-inlay furniture, metallic Moroccan pouffes, rich velvet sofas, rococo beds, art deco console tables and fabulous embroidered cushions. Lose yourself in their website and get inspired.

Moroccan leather pouffes, £129. Available at www.grahamandgreen.co.uk

Interior designer Abigail Ahern's style is moody and whimsical in equal measures, and her London boutique perfectly captures that vibe. Her book, A Girl's Guide to Decorating, was one I referenced time and time again when decorating my apartment — and I'm still lusting after that pink lacquered coffee table.

Lacquer coffee table, £875. Available at atelierabigailahern.com

I've always wanted to fill my closets with exquisite creations from Marni and Vivienne Westwood, but now, thanks to The Rug Company's amazing designer collaborations, I want to cover my floors with them, too.

Habitat is Britain's answer to Ikea — with an added dose of style and sophistication. Founded in the Sixties by retail/restaurant legend Sir Terence Conran, the company brought great design to the masses and continues to be a fantastic source for modern (and affordable) home furnishings.

Zest bed linen set, £29 . Available at www.habitat.co.uk.

For a carefully curated mix of high-end design and products with a sense of humour, don't miss The Conran Shop, another jewel in the Conran crown. I love perusing the site for cool gifts, like this platinum jug shaped like a classic milk carton.

Daily Aesthetics Platinum Milk Jug, £16. Available at
