About Gabrielle Johnson

When shopping finally becomes an Olympic event, editor Gabrielle Johnson is pretty sure she’ll take home the gold medal for Canada – after inquiring about the availability of other colours (lilac? chartreuse?) and politely requesting a discount. Every week, she shares a glimpse into what’s on her style radar.

Kitchen Wish List

life/style Toronto (Aug.03.10)

I have a confession to make: I'm a total food-prep poser. Back in June, when I owned up to being clueless in the kitchen, I failed to mention that my lack of culinary skills doesn't stop me from coveting — and occasionally buying — fancy cooking equipment that I will never, ever use. I love the look of shiny, box-fresh appliances, despite the fact that I could feasibly survive with just two "cooking tools" for the rest of my life: a cereal bowl and a spoon. Ridiculous as it might be, here's my kitchen wish list:

KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

I'm not a baker, but I'd like to think I could be, if only I owned a gorgeous KitchenAid Stand Mixer (in every colour). It's so obvious the only thing standing between me and a steady stream of homemade cupcakes is the lack of retro-fabulous mixers in my possession.

Francis Francis! X1 Classic Espresso Machine

This little obsession is particularly illogical because — are you ready for this? — I don't drink coffee. Ever. But imagine how pretty this pricey Francis Francis! Espresso Machine would look sitting (untouched) on my kitchen counter.

AGA Three Oven Cooker

Back when I was a student in London, I used to house-sit for a fashion photographer who owned an AGA Three Oven Cooker. I developed a weirdly strong desire to buy an AGA of my very own, in spite of my teensy condo kitchen and utter reliance on microwaves and toaster ovens.

Le Creuset cookware

The superior quality of Le Creuset cast-iron cookware is all well and good, but I'll admit my longing for a complete set has more to do with how stylish these bad boys look displayed on open kitchen shelving. I adore my French Oven in Caribbean Blue and now I'm lusting after the deep purple Cassis range.

Smeg refrigerator

All things considered, I think my hankering for a colourful Smeg refrigerator is fairly reasonable. Everyone needs a fridge, right? The fact that the Italian-made appliances don't seem to be available in Canada only reinforces my yearning for one, of course.

What's on your kitchen wish list?
