About Janette Ewen
Veteran stylist and trend reporter, Janette Ewen’s love of the finer things has always shaped her life. Now she’s spilling industry secrets to help you make life at home sweet. From chic décor to decadent dinner parties—living with style isn’t as expensive as you think.
I love fall for a number of reasons; leaves changing colour, hearty stews, bold red wines and probably my most favourite of all…the start of new seasons and shows on TV. After a summer of reruns, all of my favourite shows are back - including my never-miss fave Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
I never (ever) make it through an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition without reaching for a box of tissues. (And have it be known, I didn’t even cry over Bridges of Madison County.) I love the show for bringing a human side to design and for those crazy kids’ rooms.
This fall, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will be airing on Citytv (on Sundays). To celebrate the hit show’s move to Citytv, www.citytv.com is running an online design contest. Canadian families are invited to build a small-scale version of their own Extreme Dream Home - out of anything they want. The contest runs until Thursday October 29th, 2009 and one lucky entrant will win a one-week trip for four to Azul Beach Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico, courtesy of itravel2000.
To help kick off the contest, celebrity designer (and my partner in crime on Cityline) Ramsin Khachi and I have put together our own mini dream homes. We’ll also be judging the contest so we wanted to set the bar high.
I’ve always admired Ramsin’s design work so I’m looking forward to seeing what he puts together. Recently I asked him what we’ll see in his 2 foot dream home model and he told me, “My dream home takes inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Waters creation. It’s a structure that balances nature where from every point within, you feel and experience the beauty of the nature surrounding you.”
I can’t wait! Unfortunately we’ll have to until next week when I’ll post photos of Ramin’s project along with a Q & A. In the meantime, tada! My project is already complete! The inspiration for my home focused on whimsical, playfulness combined with mid-century design and Japanese kitsch. I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below.

Visit www.citytv.com for full contest details and stay tuned to my blog as I’ll be posting some of my favourite submissions over the next month.
Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
