About Janette Ewen
Veteran stylist and trend reporter, Janette Ewen’s love of the finer things has always shaped her life. Now she’s spilling industry secrets to help you make life at home sweet. From chic décor to decadent dinner parties—living with style isn’t as expensive as you think.

While I love Christmas and the holidays I have been writing so many stories and doing so many segments on Cityline I decided I needed a mini-break and thought I’d look for some fresh design inspiration. I didn’t need to go too far! Last week, while on a quick tour of one of my favourite cities, Vancouver—I checked into the new Shangri-La Hotel.
Located at West Georgia and Thurlow Street, the Shangri-La is a stones throw from some of my fave shopping destinations (all on Robson Street). The hotel is now Vancouver’s tallest building and is a monument to refined luxury. I’m thinking about incorporating more of this timeless look into my home.
The look combines ornate luxury – over the top chandeliers, gold leafing and rich textiles with the streamline esthetic of Asian-inspired furnishings and artwork. A deep palette of chocolate and coffee browns is accented by gold, glass and deep red. The entire palette radiates a confident blend of decedent relaxation.

To get this look at home, I would suggest painting your walls in a soft coffee and incorporating some dark wood, Asian-inspired accessories (I’ve seen many at HomeSense). Incorporate an over-sized Chinese armoire in a chocolate tone. (There is an amazing selection all at incredible prices at JP Purveryors). Finally bring in that rich texture with a soft shag rug – the Neptune Calling Custom Rug from Urban Barn is my top pick.
See you next week with more holiday ideas…all that talk of dark chocolate browns made me hungry for holiday treats!
