Reclaimed Hard Times: In juxtaposition to over the top glamour, galleries like Smash (in Toronto’s Junction: www.smash.to ) are presenting rough and rustic reclaimed architectural pieces and salvage. This look is a pleasant compliment to modern interiors. |

Couture Area Rugs: Your floor should be seen as the 5th wall in a room. When it comes to purchasing an area rug in 2010, taste-makers will be shopping for high quality pieces that embrace refined luxury. For the last 20 years we’ve been buying bargain area rugs, wearing them out and replacing them every few years (not very green!!). Recently, designers have been purchasing hand knotted classic rugs that will last for up to 80 years and will compliment a range of design styles. A quality rug is like a Hermès Birkin, buy it once and love it forever! Rug- W Studio, www.wstudio.ca |

Masculine Surrealism: Mixing the trend of surrealism (seen throughout Parisian interiors – like the Le Meurice hotel) with masculine (think mid-century Hemmingway), this trend combines an over-the-top perception of scale with traditional masculine elements like refined wood and classic cognac-coloured leather. Neon: Seen this past season in fashion, neon accents are making their way into home décor for 2010. Added in a small, controlled fashion (as seen on these lush yet whimsical chairs shown at the recent Maison et Objet show in Paris) neon is the perfect modern touch needed to update a décor lacking colour or pop. |

Clover Motif: Borrowed from jewellery, this motif is making its way into interiors. Currently seen on fabrics and accent chairs, the clover has a classic Hollywood feel. Chair: Elte- www.elte.com |
