We'd like to think of ourselves as master gardeners, but no matter what we do (or how much we water) our plants never seem to last. Helping us get started on our own garden (and keep it living) is Mark Cullen, Master Gardener...
I want to plant a garden in my yard. What are the 5 necessities I’ll need to get started?
Quality Sharp Digging Tools: My favourite tool is an old English digging spade. Whatever you choose to use, make sure that you have either sharpened it on a rotary sharpening stone or used a bastard file to give it an edge.
Compost: Mix it with your own soil and top soil in generous quantities, regardless of what you are planting.
Quality Garden Hose: Having reliable access to water is essential to most any garden. Using a quality garden hose that resists kinking and that you do not have to fight with when you reel it up will make using it a pleasure (and less of a job).
Wheelbarrow: You will need a convenient way of transporting your seedlings and soil to the garden, and the garden debris and your harvest out of the garden. Get a good quality, light weight wheelbarrow and keep it indoors to avoid weather damage.
Rain Barrel: The most beneficial thing that you do for all plants over time is to water them using oxygen rich rain water. It's warm too! Plants just respond best to this.
