If 2012 is the year you've vowed to finally redo the kitchen, bathroom or basement, you'll definitely want to check out these hot tips from HGTV host and all-round reno-expert Bryan Baeumler. With his smart pointers and must-know insights, you're sure to avoid a Disaster DIY on home turf.
What are your top renovation pet peeves?
I have a lot of them! I would say people that chronically under-budget and don't have a realistic idea of a budget or what things cost. I'd also include people that scrimp on how a home is built (like insulation) but spend money on something like granite countertops. One of my other big ones is people leaving projects unfinished.
What renovations add the most value to a home?
This is debatable as it completely depends on your perspective. Typically bathrooms and kitchens offer the best bang for your buck — especially from a real estate perspective. However, I personally feel that upgrades that decrease the operational costs of your home are more valuable in the long-term than beautifying projects. This can include upgrading your insulation, wiring or plumbing, or any structural upgrades.
What do you think of flipping houses?
It depends on how it's done. I don't mind it being done as long as it's not just a cosmetic enhancement to increase the value of the home. You have to think about it from a moral, ethic and environmental perspective rather than just doing a "lipstick fix".
What is the worst DIY reno you've ever seen?
There are so many! The worst I've seen was a basement that was finished in metal studs — not finished properly — and all of the walls were live. That was a project for Disaster DIY.
Are there any DIY projects a first-timer should avoid?
Yes. A first-timer should never do electrical, plumbing or structural work.
What are some tips on finding a great contractor?
That's a great question — I'd recommend going to www.baeumlerapproved.ca. But really you need to find someone who is experienced and qualified — and most importantly, is licensed, insured and covered by WSIB.
