Imagine criss-crossing the globe on a quest for the planet's most-covetable goods, and you've got a pretty good idea of what Aaron Hoey does for a living.
But sussing out the greatest finds from far-flung places can't be as easy as Hoey makes it look (or can it?), so we sat down with the Anthropologie GMM (and Gap veteran) to talk about inspiration, cohesive curation and the places he loves to visit most:
There have been so many amazing and inspiring collaborations at Anthropologie. What's the process of finding people to work with?
Constant research, exploration, and networking. We spend a great deal of time traveling the globe to remote locations to meet new and interesting people who come from a vast variety of cultures, training, and backgrounds. Their common thread is that they are supremely talented at their craft and they are generally nice people.
As a globetrotting design-seeker, which places do you love visiting the most?
Any place I still haven't been! The world has become small in many ways but yet there is so much to see and so many people to meet. It's important to explore where you've never been.
Curating items from such vastly different styles and countries, how do you get all the disparate pieces to work together — and with the Anthropologie brand?
Anthropologie is all about layers. It's what makes the composition so rich. We are never about bringing you a place or a single look. When things collide is when they are at their best. That being said, timing can make or break a season. We generally know what we are looking for to achieve the proper balance in the store. It's just a matter of getting out there and finding it.
What are you most excited for at IDS?
I've never been! I'm excited to see what brings so many people to this incredible show. I hope to meet some local talent while I'm there.
Are there any big projects you're working on right now?
Tons. We always have a lot of projects in work at any given time. I can't share them with you though, it would ruin the element of surprise in the store.
