This traditional dessert is easy to make and to alter. Try substituting your favourite in-season fruit so that you can enjoy it year round.
Ingredients
Filling:
2 lb plums, halved, pitted, each cut into 6 wedges
1/3 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
Topping:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1 stick chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3/4 cup sliced almonds, coarsely chopped
Vanilla ice cream
Directions:
To make the filling:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. Toss the plums, sugar, and cinnamon sticks in an 8-inch square baking dish.
3. Arrange the mixture evenly in the dish tucking the cinnamon sticks beneath the plums.
To make the topping:
1. Mix the flour, sugar, and oats in a medium bowl to blend.
2. Using your fingers, rub the butter into the fl our mixture until moist clumps form.
3. Mix in the almonds. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the plum mixture.
4. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the juices bubble, the fruit is tender and the topping is golden brown.
5. Allow the crumble to stand at room temperature for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
6. Spoon the crumble into bowls and serve with vanilla ice cream.
