Guest blogger Editorial Assistant Samantha Speisman is getting ready to break into the real estate market and she's sharing first hand her first time experience…...
I’m ready to get out.
Not that I don’t love my parents, I do. They're amazing, and really let me come and go as I please with almost no questions at all. They even built me a pseudo bachelor apartment in the basement so that R. and I can live peacefully (and rent-free) there. But as I grow up, and continue to work in the city, there is a huge part of me that yearns to live right in the heart of it, too. There is something about the hustle and bustle of Toronto that just tugs at my heart strings. So, I've been saving my money and am hoping to purchase a place of my own by the end of the year. I know it will be a huge undertaking, and the questions I have are endless…
- Do I want a resale or something new?

- Where do I want to live? Midtown or Downtown?
- Do I want a loft or a condo?
- High-rise or Mid-rise?
- Do I even want a condo? Maybe I want a house?
It’s become all encompassing. I spend hours on MLS, reading home magazines and watching HGTV (and of course, browsing Sweethome.ca). I browse new building sites checking out the floor plans (even the ones I can’t afford), all the while dreaming of a time when I’ll have a place of my own.
I thought I would start simple. Below is a list of everything I would like to find in my perfect place. Am I being unrealistic? Should I search until I find something that has everything? Or should I let some things slide?
My Requirements
- Must have 2 bathrooms (regardless whether it’s a 1 or 2 bedroom)
- Lots of windows
- On the subway line
- Large closet (or room to build a built-in somewhere)
- Balcony
- Double sink in ensuite bath
- Large enough living space for a desk (or a den to put a desk)
If you have any suggestions of buildings I should look at it or neighbourhoods you love please log in and let me know!
Wish me Luck!
-Sam
Stay tuned for more blog posts as Sweethome follows my search for the perfect first place.
