Perfect Picnics

sarah's space canada (Aug.18.09)

On Sunday I had my first Toronto Island picnic. It was divine. While this wasn’t my first visit to the Island, it was the first that was planned strictly for pleasure and picnicking. I must admit until Sunday, I had been hindered by my country-born snobbery (funny, right) when it comes to Toronto and its waterfront.

Raised in Grey-Bruce county where fresh water lakes and beaches abound, I always felt sorry for Torontonians. All that waterfront and nowhere to swim but pools, what a shame, I would think. Even after living here for seven years, the thought of getting in Lake Ontario? Ew, no!

But I’ve never been opposed to being surrounded by the waters of Lake Ontario, so T. and I packed a picnic and invited good friends to join us for our look at the lake. It was so hot I figured we might catch a breeze without high rises to impede. I didn’t even bother with my bathing suit or a towel, what would be the point?

Big mistake! We arrived at Hanlon’s Point and our friends led us to their favourite spot on Gibraltor Point Beach. It was beautiful. With the city hidden behind us and only water to be seen for miles, it felt like we were on a city escape. The beach was busy but not packed and people were actually swimming. No one had a care in the world (or a third limb or anything) and I felt hot and ridiculous (not to mention jealous) sweating in my shorts and t-shirt. I almost considered wandering over to Hanlon’s Point for some clothing optional swimming. (Not really, I don’t think I could ever muster the confidence or nerve.)

Alas, I had to make the most of wading and focus on just enjoying the picnic instead. It wasn’t too hard. The food was amazing! We had burgers with a side of shrimp and veggies skewers and watermelon for dessert. In fact, I’ve got two new picnic essentials I just have to share:

Lokkii Here

I know we already told you about the Lokkii Grill but I have to mention it again. I LOVE this thing. Compact, eco-friendly and so easy to use, it’s pretty darn close to perfect. Have I mentioned I love it? ($50, www.lokkiicharcoal.com)

Spice It Up

Looking for an effortless way to up the flavour quotient in your kebabs? Enter PC's Flavoured Skewers. Simply spear your favourite ingredient on these bad boys (I used zucchini, shittake mushrooms and yellow peppers) and grill. ($5, Loblaws and Superstores)

I can’t wait to do it all again next weekend and I will definitely be bringing my suit. If you live in Toronto, see you on the beach!
