Kitchen Mini-Makeover: Part 1

sarah's space canada (Jan.12.10)

Almost two years ago T. and I moved into our 739 square foot condo. There were so many reasons we loved it (practical and functional layout, walking distance to both of our offices, great downtown location to name a few) but like most new spaces it didn’t meet all of our criteria. For instance, while the original homeowner took immaculate care of the space she certainly didn’t splurge on any upgrades builders offer. Hey, I can appreciate practical.

Getting Started
All that said, when Home Depot approached me with the opportunity to do a mini-makeover I knew exactly where I wanted to start upgrading, the kitchen. It’s the hub of our little home and could definitely use a little revitalizing. To get started I met with Georgina Steele, one of Home Depot’s kitchen designers for two easy consultations. The first took place in store. Georgina helped me to assess what I wanted to do and we settled on a countertop upgrade, kitchen sink and faucet. We both felt that these changes would have the most impact and add the most resale value in long term. (Appliances and a cabinetry overhaul are now what T. and I are saving for.)

Solid Choices
Next Georgina introduced me to all of the different lines and price points for countertops, sink and faucets. Choosing my countertop was easy. While granite and marble were what came to mind first, it only took a second for me to completely fall in love with Silestone ($80/sq. ft.). Made from the natural mineral quartz, Silestone counters are non-porous (read: less germs), stain- and scratch-resistant and come in a variety of colours and finishes. After much debating I chose Amazon. I thought would add some depth to my kitchen without contrasting the light cabinets and white appliances.

Urban and Industrial Style
Then it was on to faucets and sinks. I was excited to be replacing my generic existing fixtures but must admit I didn’t have a stronger feeling for these as Georgina and I browsed. Eventually I did choose two practical options and was satisfied.

However, later at my home appointment Georgina surprised me with Blanco’s newest catalogue hot off the presses. She thought I might like the modern industrial designs and she couldn’t have been more right. I instantly agreed to her recommendation to use the stainless steel STEELART Precision U 1 sink ($925) and Ziros faucet ($886) to match. Both have an ultra-modern square design and are perfect for adding some industrial style to my otherwise classic kitchen.

Once I finalized my choices, Home Depot sent a contractor to the condo to measure for the counter and sink supplies and then within a week and a half we were all set to begin renovations.

Come back next week for Kitchen Mini-Makeover: Part 2. I’ll tell you how the installation went and show you how the makeover turned out.
