My Cookbook Library

sarah's space canada (Apr.13.10)

Busted! While I had intended to attempt another recipe test over the weekend, I must confess a busy schedule and a little pregnancy fatigue prevented me from making this happen. Instead I thought I would share with you a round up of my favourite cookbooks from my kitchen library. They often serve as inspiration for my tests so I thought they might just inspire you, too.

David Rocco's Dolce Vita by David Rocco

I can't think of a cookbook that I've used as often as this one and I have yet to come across a recipe that's anything short of amazing. Eggs in Purgatory with Scamoraza (page 297), Risotto Alla Puttanesca (page 244), Spaghetti in Lemon Sauce (page 229), Rolled Beef (page 278)...

$40, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

Lighthearted at Home by Anne Lindsay

This cookbook has only been in my collection for a short time but already T. and I have a number of favourite dishes. At the top of that list, Easy Cranberry Chocolate Cookies (page 376).

$40, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

Mrs. Fields Cookie Book by Debbi Fields

Speaking of cookies, I absolutely could not survive the holidays without this book. It's the source of all of my Christmas baking. It also features the best Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe (page 10) I have ever made.

$17, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

The Best of Chef at Home by Michael Smith

Whether I'm looking for simple dinner ideas or impressive entertaining recipes, I know I can find the perfect dish in this collection. Toasted Quinoa Pilaf (page 152) and Orange Mustard Grilled Pork Tenderloin (page 107) are two go-to faves.

$30, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

Fresh by Anna Olson

I love that this cookbook offers seasonally inspired recipes both for casual and formal entertaining. Anna's individual Apple Cranberry Crisps (page 131) have pleased a crowd at my dinner table more than once now.

$30, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

Betty Crocker Cookbook by The Betty Crocker Editors

Sounds a little funny I know but this cookbook was invaluable to me as I learned my way around the kitchen. It has great notes for substitutions, conversions and basic cooking times and advice for just about any food you can think of. It also has a number of surprisingly good recipes such as Apple Coffee Cake (page 52).

$20, available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

What in Karnation Smells So Good? by The Karn Family

Nearest and dearest to my heart, this is a family cookbook my mom gave me from a family reunion about 10 years ago. It features many secret family recipes including those for my Gramma's infamous pea soup and glazed donuts. This book is a family treasure that I can't wait to share with my kids.

Have a must-have cookbook? Tell me about it in the comments below. You might just inspire my next recipe test...that is assuming I can get enough sleep and clear my schedule!
