From Paper to Prototype

Sarah's Space canada (Jun.23.09)

Always a fan of How It’s Made and new design ideas, last week I couldn’t resist an invitation to celebrate the release of 10 furniture prototypes along with the creative process that brought them to life. The event, called Mi Casa Su Casa, was hosted at Casalife (a gorgeous factory conversion store in Toronto’s Liberty Village) by owner Rob Whitfield. Similar to a gallery opening, I was able to mingle around the furniture exhibits, chat with the designers and see the napkin designs which inspired the pieces.

The entire evening was intended to give the creative design process centre stage and in my opinion the cast of designers did not disappoint. To give full credit where credit is due, the evening’s designers were: Fashion Designers Christopher Bates, Evan Biddell and Bustle Clothing, Chef Roger Mooking, Charles Khabouth from INK, Graphic Designer Studiolit, Interior Designers Karen Sealy from Sealy Design Inc. and Carmen Dragomir from esQape Design, Architecture Studio raw Design, Matt, Anwar and Allan from the Design Agency and eTalk host Tanya Kim.

And while I think all of prototypes were impressive, for the sake of space I’ve narrowed my list down to a top two. I must confess my bias to space-savers and multi-purpose furniture up front. I’m condo dweller so what can I say? I always have to have function with my style.

Stepping beyond fashion, Evan’s chair was inspired by the throne and adapted for today’s modern home. I love its weight and, of course, the element of storage below.

Quite simply, I love this versatile piece of furniture. The seating and shelving is obvious and smart, but what really won me over with this piece is the desk extension hidden just out of the lens’s sight. You’ll have to trust me, it’s genius.

PS- On a somewhat unrelated note, while all of the food and drink at the party was delish I just had to share with you a quick snap of Sublime Catering’s salad bar. The greens were picked at the party! It just doesn’t get any fresher.

Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
