January bites. There’s an epidemic of stay-home-itis, caused by maxed-out credit cards and maxed-out waistlines.
Now two Calgary nutritionists have come out with a cure. Barb Davies and Jennifer Rallison have released SLICE – Health Inspired Food ($29.95), a new cookbook featuring 150 tasty, healthy recipes made with ingredients available in Cowtown.
The colourful book emphasizes the benefits of organic and whole foods, and recommends steering clear of anything genetically modified and processed if we want to be more energized and better focused. Turns out, they’re right. (This was written without the aid of caffeine; we were fuelled entirely by a quinoa tabbouleh salad.)
SLICE is full of quick and easy options, including starters, salads, lunches, dinners and desserts (all made without refined or artificial sugars). The recipes are primarily vegetarian with ideas of pairing organic meat and fish. Many of the dishes are wheat- and dairy-free. There’s also a grocery guide for health food neophytes, and fun tips from other local health professionals. (Who knew eating wild salmon helps with dry eyes?) Our only problem now is deciding what’s for dinner: seaside halibut kebabs or vegetable lasagna?
January still bites – but now it tastes so much better.
