Few meals leave us exclaiming “Holy mackerel!”
To be honest, it was more like: Holy salmon! Holy barbequed meats! Holy maki rolls, noodle soups, lobster tempura and dainty little dessert oranges!
The cause of our religious experience? Hikari, a brand new Japanese-Korean restaurant on 16th Avenue that is belt-busting good. The portions are huge. The quality is high. The prices are low. What’s there not to like?
Hikari’s eight-page menu is as varied as it is long: Grill-it-yourself meat and seafood dishes, loads of soups and bento boxes, plus enough sushi selections to keep a beluga whale happy.
The Korean hot pots are big sellers -- what self-respecting Calgarian can resist an open flame on their table? We’d suggest pairing it with a few of Hikari’s unique rolls like the kamikage tuna roll ($13.95), a behemoth of a roll with too many toppings to name. And don’t miss the sushi pizza ($11.95), built on a crust of rice, covered in tempura batter, and topped with salmon and green onion.
A word of warning: the chef will send out so many fun, free tasters that you’ll run out of room in no time.
Come hungry, leave full. It’s a miracle.
