Rise to the Occasion

There are sandwiches. And then there are sandwiches.
Rise, the newly opened bakery and our favourite new lunch spot, makes the latter.
Rise's sandwich-eristas start the masterpieces with two slices of their own specialty artisan bread. Then, they pile on the goods—locally produced veggies and meats, gourmet cheese, and yummy spreads like homemade hummus. They throw the whole thing into a Panini press, and voila! A combination that would make the Earl of Sandwich (the Englishman who invented the bread-based staple that bears his name) proud.
We delighted in tasting the tuna melt ($7.95), made with yellowfin tuna and an herbed aioli on sourdough. And we could live on the smoked turkey combo ($7.95) with sliced pear and sweet onion. A meal-sized gourmet salad ($8.95) plus one of two delicious daily soups ($4.25 - $6.25) can fill up our non-sandwich-loving lunch companions. Everything—including the bread—is made from scratch each morning.
And for our afternoon pick-me-up? Baker Whitney Armstrong's artisan breads and buns are ready to go. Her specialty is a chocolate sourdough bun stuffed with Bernard Callebaut chocolate ($6/loaf, $2.35/mini loaf). Bread and chocolate? We've died and gone to carb heaven….
