Last night was hot. Downright sizzled. If smoking weren’t wholly objectionable, we would have asked for a cigarette after the deed.
Get your heads out of the gutter – we’re talking about a restaurant.
Spicy, sultry Mango Shiva has returned to Stephen Avenue. More than one year after the original restaurant was demolished in the downtown overhaul, brothers Kam and Neil Dhillon have opened a new incarnation of their popular eatery.
The space, designed by the local McKinley Dang Burhart Design Group, evokes images of an Indian temple. Dark polished woods, silk pillows, velvet banquettes and crystal chandeliers create an elegant, intimate atmosphere. Stylish servers wearing glittering bindis on their foreheads add to the sense of mystique. (Check out the beautiful wallpapering in the bathrooms. Seriously.)
You can expect the same mouth-watering cuisine that made the first Mango Shiva famous around town. The menu features northwestern Indian fare, fused with flavours from the various cultures of the east. For an unforgettable opening, try the coconut calamari ($12). Move onto the chili-ginger salmon ($22) and nibble your way through the charcoal-fired lamb spiced with almonds, cinnamon and sultanas ($22). And just when you think you can’t take any more pleasure, go in for a cup of homemade chai tea ($2.50).
Goodness, is it getting hot in here?
