If you're still suffering through a low-carb diet, we suggest you click away, and fast. The shop of all things delectably carb has recently quietly re-opened after a nine-month closure for renovations.
Verdict: It's been worth the wait. Manuel Latruwe Belgian Patisserie & Bread Shop now boasts almost double its capacity, which means double the flaky and crumbly goodness for us to savour.
We licked our fingers after we devoured the ham and cheese croissant sandwich ($4.25)--made irresistibly creamy with just a flash in the microwave (sacrilege in Paris, perhaps; but our taste buds couldn't care less).
The mushroom and goat cheese quiche ($9-$14) was perfect for lunch, and the Merveilleux (layers of meringue, whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings, $6.50) knocked us off our feet. (Fortunately we were seated at a cafe table at the time.)
We couldn't help but bring some loot home, especially loaves of freshly-baked black currant rye and sundried tomato and herb bread ($5.25) - both with deliciously crusty crust - and a pint of pistachio ice cream ($6.50-$9.75, made on site).
If 'carb' continues to be a naughty four-letter word, we'll remain sinners for life.
