Sushi

sushiCalgary (Feb.12.07)

It's raw, it's slimy and oh-so good. We're talking sushi with a capital "S." And for those of us who covet this uncooked delicacy, we're highlighting some of the most finger-licking bites available in this week's Best Of sushi list...
    sushi
  1. Best value: Sushi Ginza
    Willowpark Village; 403-271-9642
For those who are in search of substantial pieces of fish, this is the place. Huge chunks might be stretching it, but bigger than most would be an accurate description. Just a couple pieces of their salmon sushi ($2) will have you patting your tummy in full satisfaction.

  2. Best tuna: Misai
    7-1915 32 Ave. N.E.; 403-250-1688
Forget the canned stuff — it's all about the fresh and red tuna sushi here ($2.50). It's melt in your mouth quality will make you believe it is candy. You know, the fishy cold and wet kind.

  3. Best use of eel: Fuji Yama
    118 5 Ave. S.E.; 403-266-1068
Be adventurous and try the eel. For beginners, the presentation is a little less daunting in the Fuji Yama's Dragon Roll ($7.80), a delectable combination of the water serpent, avocado and cucumber. Perfect for sharing with a date. And we adore the After-Dragon Roll mint.

  4. Best sushi boats: Hana Sushi
    1803 4 St. S.W.; 403-229-1499
Think of it as slightly more expensive Value Meal, with a salad and miso soup to start, as well as an assortment of fresh sushi and sashimi to complete the deal. It's a perfect night out with the girl (or boy) friends, and beats the Mac and fries. ($18/person)

  5. Best vegetarian: Zen 8
    513 8 Ave. S.W.; 403-237-8884
When out with sushi novices, it's best to get their feet wet on fishless ground. Suggest the try the yummy YamYam Roll, (yam tempura, cucumber, lettuce and avocado, $7.75) or the Shitake Sushi (sweet Japanese mushrooms with rice, $2.00) for their introduction to this savoury world.
