Whet your appetite with our Best Of list of stinky cheese shops. And while there may not be a lot of them (but we have found the top three), each boast a tasty variety from homegrown blue to French brie...

  1. Homegrown Blue Cheese: Springbank Cheese Company
    10816 MacLeod Tr. S.E.; 403-225-6040
    Delectably crumbly and earthy (and inexpensive), this Quebec-made Ermite Blue Cheese is fantastic as a topping on salads or by itself. Note: crumbling with fingers will inevitably lead to constant delicious licking. 100 grams: $3.95.

  2. Best Brie: Janice Beaton Fine Cheese
    1708 8 St. S.W.; 403-229-0900 & 1249 Kensington Rd. N.W.; 283-0999
    Okay, okay so it's not stinky (but other cheeses in the shop are) it is so soft and creamy we had to mention is. Plus, the Edel de Cleron from France has us savouring this cheese without any crackers or fruit. 100 grams: $6.95.

  3. Best Reblochon: Say Cheese Fromagerie
    1235 26 Ave. S.W.; 403-262-7530
    Hard to find, but worth the trouble. We delight in this unpasteurized French cheese for one simple reason: it's smooth and rich and delicious. Word to the wise: Do not serve at your next hostessing gig if there aren't any cheese lovers in attendance. The strong smell is surely not for the timid. 100 grams: $8.00.
