“Oh, give us a home where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the…” Oh, who are we kidding? We think deer are sweet (when we can admire them from afar) and buffalo – well, they’re definitely not cute and we prefer our home in the city.
Feeling a little bit country (sans venturing out there), we mosey on over to Old Montreal’s newest establishment, Grange (vin +bouffe). This wine bar meets tapas joint was the last place we expected to find anything slightly western. Think plaid-wearing servers, cowhide barstools and food served on wooden slabs, all in a room where rustic woods dominate the décor.
A menu filled with petits plats means the more the merrier (i.e. the more folks at our table the more we could try). We took heed and munched on scrumptious nibbles like grilled cheese Grange ($7), Mozarella di buffala Grange ($11), mini bison burgers ($10) and oysters ($3/each). With bar stools actually comfy enough to fully enjoy a meal and a couple of hours spent admiring (and sampling) the abundance of wines available by the glass, we felt right at home.
We’re skipping the cowboy boots in favour of heels and leaving the cowboy hat behind – this country destination is city approved.
