A public service announcement: Once you’ve safely made it through puberty, sending a post first date email with a JPEG of flowers or hitting the (f) emoticon in an instant message does not equal the real thing.
Yes, we (try to) appreciate the thought. And we get the convenience factor (online, don’t know the best address…). But since hearing about Social Flowers there aren’t any excuses.
It started with a message in that social networking site we’re hooked on: Our new friend (and recent date) was sending us flowers and needed the best place to send them. Once we gave the company our preferred address (no, not all of our dates see where we live right away) a local affiliated florist sent us the real deal he’d already paid for. (And our location still remains part of our je ne sais quoi appeal.)
Then, when we noticed our Grade 5 best friend’s birthday was coming up (thanks Facebook reminders), we just added the Social Flowers application and picked out a bouquet. She still gets the surprise of receiving flowers (albeit in message form first) without us awkwardly emailing: “Hi, I know we haven’t spoken since Timmy split his Joe Louis with you and not me, but where do you live?”
We’ll work on weaning off the emoticons next. ;)
